I saw the cutest video the other day that really tugged at my heart.
Starting when she was 4 years old, Davey Orgill interviewed his daughter, Daisy, every year on her birthday. What a fun tradition! I wish I had thought to do that when my daughters were little.
Through the interviews, Davey could follow Daisy’s changing interests, her favorite foods, and dreams for the future. You can see her personality come alive as a young girl, fade as a teen and re-emerge as a vivacious young adult.
When my daughters were in school, I used the same frame to stack school pictures year after year. Each year, when I inserted the most recent photograph, I could marvel at the transformation my daughters were going through. It wasn’t as obvious in the day-to-day activities, but seeing the photos side-by-side over 12 years was heartwarming.
Today, recording the videos would be as simple as holding your phone or setting it up on a tripod with your daughter as the center of attention.
Here are some questions you could ask to record how she changes over the years:
- What are you going to do for your birthday this year?
- What do you like to do for fun?
- What do you want to be or do when you are an adult?
- What is your favorite song/food/dessert/movie?
- Who are your best friends and what do you like to do together?
- What is your favorite subject in school?
- What makes you happy/mad/sad?
- What are you most proud of doing in the past year?
- What are your goals for the year ahead?
- If you could change one thing, what would it be?
- If you could have three wishes, what would you wish for?
To see what this father did, the entire 75-minute video can be found on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3ZRs2bpcl0.
A much shorter Instagram reel can be found at https://www.instagram.com/reels/DVzezxlkRih.
If I were Davey, the videos would be the centerpiece of a graduation or wedding celebration in Daisy’s future.
